Lets face it Hushpuppy and her father are the stars and the sole reason for the success of the movie. Unfortunately, this was a train wreck. The assorted supporting cast of characters wandered aimlessly throughout the movie without any direction. The stereotypes were insulting. The metaphors and symbolism were like a sledgehammer over the head (especially the final scene). There was a total lack of realism in dealing with the tragedies. Too many scenes reminded me of a 6th grade play. Unless you are an independent artsy film lover, just stay away.

This was an absolutely beautiful and magical film and I highly recommend seeing it in the theaters. The atmosphere that the director created in this film is full of mystery and danger and the story moves in between fantasy and reality and I have never seen it done in such a beautiful and effortless way. This film is nothing like i have seen before and it was like a breath of fresh air, I was revived after i saw this movie. It is hard to believe that it is possible to make a fairy tale out of hurricane Katrina but director Benh Zeitlin did exactly that and i praise him fo

A true 5 star independent film. Unforgettable and different. Done is a unique way the reminds me a bit of Bergman. But much grittier and down to earth than that. If there aren't Academy award nominations for this film it will be a crime. If you are a film maven - you cannot mis this film.

This film was absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend seeing it in the theaters. My friend saw this film and could not stop talking about it so I decided to give it a chance and I am so happy I did. The film was beautiful, heartbreaking and magical and in my opinion it is the best film of the year. This film is small but the impact it made on me is big and amazing and I urge you to experience this movie as well. I do not remember the last time I saw such an original and sweet film and it made me very happy.

I'd heard a lot about this movie as it made its way through the festivals earlier this year and it quickly became the "buzziest" movie around. After seeing it, it's not hard to imagine why. This is a hard hitting and yet dreamlike movie that every American should see. It will probably shock many people to learn that such places as the Bathtub still exist in modern day America. Imagine the land of Huckleberry Finn being a reality in 2012. That's the sad truth for the characters in this story, namely a young girl named Hushpuppy who is reared to live alone by her father who knows he won't be around forever. Hushpuppy is kind of a miracle child who finds magic in all sorts of unlikely places and people. She's probably the only character I can think of in a movie who can turn a garbage dump into a magical land of unknown treasures waiting to be discovered. This should be mandatory viewing for every American citizen.

Oh my god oh my god OH MY GOD! Such an AMAZING movie! Absolutely stellar and totally the kind of movie that everyone should see! It's about a destitute community in Louisiana called "The Bathtub" which seems to have been stuck in the last 100 years. There is no such thing as technology there. A little girl named Hushpuppy learns from her father how to survive so that she can live on her own even after he dies - and in the world of "the Bathtub" death can come from anything at any moment. The performance by the little girl who plays Hushpuppy is SO amazing, you have to see it to believe it. She does what even actors who have been around for decades and decades cannot do - she makes you forget that you're watching a movie. There are some parts that are hard to watch, but I think if you approach it with an open mind, you will surprised by how it also opens your heart. The BEST movie of 2012, hands down.

One of my favorite movies ever is "Precious" with the amazing Gabourey Sibide. I saw a trailer for this movie and it seemed to have the same kind of mix of reality and fantasy as "Precious" so I wanted to see it. To be honest, the movie is really confusing and seems more like a dream the director had than an actual story that takes place in the real world. I know there are poor communities in the US, but this one seems to be really extreme and I wasn't sure if they were playing it up for the sake of the movie or if it was an actual place. I hope that people these days don't really live like this and if they do then that's a shame because we're supposed to be the greatest country on Earth. I loved the character of Hushpuppy, the little girl who has to survive in a world that will surely devour her if she lets it. It's a good lesson in surviving the unimaginable but I still think it could have been better if it were less dreamy and more straight reality.

Um okaaayyy. Not exactly sure what to say about this movie because it didn't really feel like a movie, more like one of those movies they make us watch in history class about current events. I wanted to get into the story but I just couldn't. It felt like it was trying to be both a doc**entary and a fantasy and it couldn't pick one. You cant really mesh the two because then it feels really bizarre. The father character in the movie is kind of a pill and I was surprised that he could treat his innocent daughter that way. If you remember all the horrible images of the people who lost their homes and lives during Katrina, you'll think that this movie is just a recap of that kind of tragedy. Except this time there is no hurricane, it's just endless suffering and poverty that the people have to deal with. You might even wish that you could see the old footage from CNN because it makes you glad that you don't live in that world. It's a real kick in the pants, this movie. Pretty slow and not as interesting as it should be.

I liked this movie somewhat but I think it's definitely way too graphic in some ways to watch with your family. I wanted my kids to see a movie about something that has some social relevance so I took them to see this because the reviews were good. It was a good, different movie, the kind that you don't see very often. It kind of feels almost like a doc**entary and to be honest I'm not sure if the people in it were actors or not, they're so believable. But then I think there is such a thing as too much reality and this movie kind of makes you feel sad and hopeless for the people who have to live this way. After watching it, I wished I spent my time actually doing something to help the people of "the Bathtub" than just sitting in a movie theater and watching a story about it. The little girl who plays the main character is absolutely adorable and I wanted to just scoop her out of the screen and into my arms. This is a movie that kids should only see with their parents because they will have many questions about what is in it. Be prepared to have a long discussion afterwards.

Every so often you get to see a movie that's so much more than just a piece of entertainment. You feel almost like you're bearing witness to something you know exists but that you never really understood. "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is one such movie. This movie is touching, tragic, devastating, and uplifting all at the same time. It tell the story of a community in New Orleans that is so poor it almost seems untouched by the modern world. There are no computers, cell phones, internet lines or television. The most advanced technology they have is electricity - and that too only occasionally. The story is told through the eyes of a young girl named Hushpuppy who seems to be touched with a magical awareness that makes her an almost enlightened figure. She knows that what she endures is difficult, but she also knows that the outside world doesn't have use for someone like her. The movie is really well made and I am sure it will win all kinds of awards next year. If you're lucky enough to be near a theater that's playing it, then please please please go see it! Such movies deserve our wholehearted support.
