It takes a lot for me to sit through a movie with Matthew McConaughey (I mean, the guy is just *awful*!) but I found this movie to be a change of pace from the usual stripper story. It has its moments that are just about naked men gyrating on stage, but there's an actual story here too that gets you thinking about strippers as real people and not just as, well, whores and whoremongers. Channing Tatum is the star of the movie and even though I don't get his appeal, I admit that he plays the part of Magic Mike very well. Alex Pettyfer came across as kind of a diva but I can see why he would get cast in the part. He just looks like a guy who'd end up as a stripper, LOL. I thought the best performances were from Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, and Olivia Munn. You don't have to be a horny lady or a gay guy to appreciate this movie. It's not Soderbergh's best effort, but it's good to see that he can take fluff and give it backbone.
Matt Bomer shirtless? Check. Adam Rodriguez topless? Check! Channing Tatum gyrating half naked on stage? OH HELL YES DOUBLE CHECK! These are just three of the hunky, beefy reasons to see "Magic Mike" one of the most unexpected movies of the summer season. I was curious to see it because I wanted to see if it had a story (you know, in addition to all the shirtless hunks) and to my surprise it did. It's not just a flesh movie made for women and gay men. It has a lot of heart and you'll be surprised by how thoughtful the movie is at its most critical moments. It's especially cool to see Channing Tatum in yet another big hit this year - after The Vow and 21 Jump Street - which proves he's a bonafide star. I always knew he'd make it big so it's nice to see that everyone else has jumped on the Channing Bandwagon! As for me, I'll settle for jumping on Channing Tatum himself. RAWR.
Went with my Mom(79)she fell asleep. It was ok ,thought it would be funnier, chic movie for sure.Good for girls night out.
I went to this show with my wife. As far as male viewers, there was me and one young man with a group of girls his age. There were quite a few ladies present as I expected.
Now to the movie. Needless to say, I didn't especially enjoy the cheek shots, but with all fairness there were some nice shots of ladies without their tops. I am trying to keep this clean so it will go.
The movie had a very good story line and I did enjoy it.
Guys, give your ladies a break and take them to this movie. They will enjoy it and I think you will also.
Okay, let's just be clear from the get-go: there's only one reason to see this movie . . . and that reason's name is CHANNING TATUM! After "The Vow" and "21 Jump Street", he's on a roll in 2012 with another awesome movie that just leaves you begging for more! I thought this was going to be just a flesh show for beefcake, but it was actually really well written and well acted. I think that's because Steven Soderbergh is the director. He adds depth to the story of a very silly and superficial world.
Matthew McConaughey is really good in his part as an aged stripper who runs a male strip club. He really fits the part well. Matt Bomer and Adam Rodriguez are also great in their parts and they seem to *really* enjoy dancing half naked on stage in front of screaming women. But Channing Tatum is the show - he's not just fine to look at but plays his role like a total natural. Maybe it's cuz he started his career as a stripper, so he seems to have come full circle, eh? Anybody else in this role would have been less than believable. He makes the movie.
Well what can I say but WOO HOO! Lol, no seriously, this was our special movie for our weekly Friday Girls' Night Out with my friends (all of us in our 40s) who wanted to see home hunky mancake take it off. This one has it all - Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, Adam Rodriguez, and my favorite of ALL TIME, Matt Bomer. (Who care's if he's gay? He's HAWT!)
The movie is a sweet story about a haven some well built men in Florida have created for themselves and other "lost boys". Channing Tatum is the star as Magic Mike who creates magic every time he gets on stage. The dance sequences are STUNNING and put everything in Rock of Ages to shame. Believe me, if you want to see some real musical action, this is the movie to watch. You'll be drooling on your way out of the theater!
okay, first of all, I'm a straight guy so I only went to see this movie because I heard the acting and the story are good. Well, they were, except that there's so much naked man gyrating and dancing that I kinda felt uncomfortable having Channing Tatum's naked crotch in my face. I heard he used to be a stripper in real life and that's how he got his start in showbiz but I don't know why he'd want to advertise that or why he'd want to make this movie. It's just like Karate Kid . . .except that it's set in a strip club.
It's directed by Steven Soderbergh who made some awesome movies about ten years ago, mostly with Matt Damon and Catherine Zeta Jones. Remember "Traffic"? That was his. This won't be remembered in ten years, except by horny old grandmas who like to see Matthew McConaughey in the nude.
In lesser hands, "Magic Mike" would be "Showgirls" (not that there's anything wrong with that). But Steven Soderbergh is not lesser hands. He's a consummate professional who knows how to show the whole of life in his movies: sometimes funny, sometimes dark. This is not to say that "Magic Mike" is next year's best picture winner, but it's a lot deeper than it ought to be. The film stars Channing Tatum as the title character. Tatum also produced the film, as its based on his experiences as a stripper. Mike does odd jobs during the day, strips at night, and has dreams of starting his own business. He meets Adam on a construction gig, and brings Adam into the world of male stripping. From here, we get to see the fun and not so fun side of the job, from the ladies to the drugs to the money. What separates this movie from a lesser film is that its not just a frothy comedy. There's some real drama going on here, and we feel like we actually get to know these guys. The movie also doesn't pull punches, going to some pretty dark places. The acting is overall excellent, topped by Matthew McConaughey as the guy that runs the strip club. It may not be high art, but it is an entertaining movie, even for guys who aren't interested in the dudes on display.
